A Few Close Ups!

Can't believe it's all over after so many weeks of planning - it's been totally exhausting but amazing fun and a great experience to put on our first Exhibtion.  St. Andrew's was a fabulous venue and the incumbent and church members incredibly welcoming and encouraging.

Inspite of the torrential wind, rain and hail on our Exhibition Day, we had a steady stream of visitors - who were drawn in by our colourful balloons outside the church and the lure of coffee and cakes along with (I'm not biased) a rich diversity of  Natural Expressions!

Here are a few close up shots of some of the work. . .

Josh's beautiful blown glass. . .

Stacey's 'Bubbles'

can you see the goldfish. . . ??!!

Fiona's 'Water Baskets'. .  . .

 Fiona's 'Frost Bowl Series'. . .

Dan's 'Minimal in Nature'

Rebecca's 'The Fallen'

Krista's 'Romanesco, Cereal and Petal Collection'. . .

Alex's titanium 'Beetle Collection'. . .

Thank you to everyone who came, for the encouragement and wonderful comments - it's a shame it's all over. . . when's the next one??!!

Fiona

Thank You

Thank you Alex for posting the Pre-Private View photos!

I'd just like to add to what Alex has put by saying a very big thank you to the Rev. Andrew Tuck, Alison and Serena from St. Andrews Church, Farnham, for letting us use their fantastic exhibition space and for being so welcoming and helpful!

Thanks also to Prof. Simon Olding, Director of the Craft Study Centre, for his support, advice and wonderful opening speech at the Private View. You gave a boost to our confidence when we were planning the event and made everything worth while with your opening comments.

Another thank you must go to the rest of the Natural Expressions team - Fiona, Alex, Rebecca, Stacey, Dan & Josh, for being such a great team to work with.

We will be posting more pictures of the event as we get them back - thank you everyone for coming along and supporting our first ever exhibition and thank you all for your lovely comments and feedback!!

Regards

Krista Thomson

P.S. Rev. Tuck would be very pleased for other students and University Groups to use the Exhibition space for future events.

Setting up the exhibition this morning, was slightly frantic!

Thankfully all the problems were answered, as the plinths were fine, a perfect amount of wine, but How many artists dose it take to change 7 light bulbs?
Well 6 not so helpful students, 2 phone calls to our dads and husbands for help, a question to google and Josh who got up the ladder to fix them all!!

It all looked really good for set up by 7 and thank you for Simon Olding for his speech, our tutor and technicians who came along with all our family and friends, class mates and acquaintances.

Well got some photographs up tomorrow for tonight, but our beds call us all, after a stressful few weeks!

Remember where open from 9 until 5 all Wednesday 25th and we look forward to see everyone!!!

Final Preparations!

To add some finishing touches to some of my Water Baskets I have been gilding on the glass with transfer leaf to give a silvery effect.  I have one blue Water Basket in the kiln at university which will have finished firing by Monday and am hoping for no disasters so I can include this one in the exhibition too!

  • The Gilding Kit - gold size, transfer leaf and a brush!

Monday will be taken up with painting plinths at the church and probably dashing around madly making final preparations ready for our Private View on Tuesday evening and our Exhibition Day on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Hope to see you there!

Frosty Leaves!

Over the Easter break I've been trying out some frosty leaves to incorporate into my pieces for the exhibition.  The pieces need firing individually and are then assembled over 2 further firings, taking about 5 days in total in the kiln - I'm experimenting with different firing cycles to try to prevent cracks from forming in the glass once they are put together. . . let's hope I can get it right so it's ready for the exhibition!

Over easter I didn't have a proper bench to work at so I made a temporary one in my desk at home which worked quite well, Im working on some titanium brooches at the moment, inspired by my beetle theme to sell at the exhibition, need to properly price them up but there'll be there.

Making the oval brooches in titanium all cut out ready to file

And another present I received this easter, apart form all the chocolate, was a set of letter punches in a make shift box from my granddad, I can't think what he used them for as he worked for the trains, but in my family were known for being hoarders! There rather different as the set is in sans serif, which I think is unusual in itself and there two Z's.

Im thinking of using them in this project now sure what for yet but they are just so lovely and most are still sharp to punch.
